Building Your Own Custom Home? Know What Upgrades To Go With

Part of the home buying process allows you to make upgrades to the home so that it best meets your needs. However, you still want to make smart choices when it comes to what you add to your home. Some upgrades are going to add value or be practical, while others are much cheaper or easy to do on your own.

Things To Upgrade

If you are building a home that has a basement, look at your options for adding height to the basement. You don't want to run into an issue where you finish your basement and your head is barely hitting the ceiling. You are able to add additional height to your basement during construction that makes it worth upgrading.

Additional lighting and outlets are something that is very cheap to add during the construction phase since the contractor just runs a little more extra cables and runs them to an electrical outlet. You won't realize that you need those electrical outlets until you go to plug something in and discover that a nearby outlet is inconvenient.

You should also look at what kind of additional storage options can be added to the home. While your focus may be on square footage of living areas, you may regret not having the storage you need down the road. This includes closets that are wider and deeper so that you can fit more stuff into them.

Things To Skip

One home upgrade that can be expensive is kitchen cabinet hardware. Thankfully, it's also an easy upgrade to do on your own. All it involves is drilling a centered hole in the cabinet and screwing on your hardware. You may be surprised at how much this home upgrade costs when you do it yourself.

You'll want to consider where you are upgrading your flooring as well. While it may make sense at the time to upgrade all of the flooring in your home from carpet to hardwood, know that you may not need hardwood in every room of your home. For example, you may have a desire to still leave the bedrooms carpeted, and it would not make sense to put expensive hardwood underneath carpeting.

Another upgrade to keep in mind is fixtures, which include plumbing and lighting fixtures. You are going to want to find a product that will best match your home's needs. Doing this upgrade on your own also gives you more time to look for the perfect fixtures that you want.

Getting Your Home Repaired

As a homeowner, you never know what kinds of problems are right around the corner. I used to try to fix things on my own, but a few months ago I realized that there were some big problems with my home. The back porch seemed to be falling away from the house, and the entire foundation was cracking slightly. I knew that I needed to do something to make things right, so I started focusing carefully on finding a general contractor. After I found a professional with the credentials that I needed, it was great to see the repairs on my home come together. Check out this blog for more information on home repairs.
